AEC/ACS main functions
Early childhood educators perform some or all of the following duties:
- develop and implement early childhood education programs that promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children;
- direct children's activities by telling them stories, teaching them songs, taking them to places of interest in the region and giving them the opportunity to express their creativity through art, role-playing, music and physical activity;
- plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, safety and well-being of children;
- assess children's abilities, skills, interests and needs, and discuss children's progress or problems with parents and other staff;
- observe children to identify learning difficulties or behavioural problems, and prepare reports for parents, guardians or supervisors;
- guide and assist children to develop good eating, toileting and dressing habits;
- establish relationships with colleagues and other community service providers for children and work with them;
- plan and organize activities for school-age children participating in before- and after-school child care programs, as required;
- monitor and coordinate the activities of other early childhood educators and assistants, as required.
